Skip Count with Calculators

Focus: Skip count using calculators.

Materials: solar-powered calculators (at least one for each pair of children); large display signs with [ON/C], [+], and [=/R] on them

Skip counting involves counting by numbers other than 1, such as counting by 2s, 5s, 10s, and 100s. Children will enjoy using their calculators to skip count; they see and say the number as they count.

Counting by 2s

Press [ON/C] to clear.

Press [+] [2] [=/R]

Keep pressing [=/R] to count to 40 by 2s. Say the numbers aloud as you go.

Press [ON/C] to clear.

To skip count forward by numbers other than 2, replace the 2 in the steps above with the number you want to count by--e.g., if you want to count by 5s, press [+] [5] instead of [+] [2].

To skip count backwards by 2s, press [-] [2] instead of [+] [2].
