Background Information Advance Preparation - Divide the class into five groups for the mystery plot activity in Part 1. You will need one envelope for each group. Use stick-on notes to prepare two sets of labels: 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5; and A, B, C, D, and E. Affix one letter-label to each envelope. Reserve the number-labels for later use. Write a correspondence between letters and numbers, for your eyes only; for example, A <=> 2, B <=> 4; C <=> 5, D <=> 1, E <=> 3. Each of the five groups will need one large piece of paper. Pads of chart paper or rolls of butcher paper, available from most school supply distributors, work well. Put one copy per student of Teaching Master next to the Math Message.
