Coins in the Classroom

Focus: Play with coins.

Materials: pennies, nickels, dimes, and quarters; muffin tins, egg cartons, or sorting trays

Provide pennies, nickels, dimes, and quarters for children's play. The money may be real (always preferable), play, or a combination of the two.

Children can sort money into muffin tins or egg cartons to make a "bank." Leave the money in your housekeeping or block corner and watch how quickly children incorporate it into their everyday play.
