Multiplication Symbols
Beginning in 4th Grade Everyday Mathematics, the following symbols are used to represent multiplication situations:

Since variables are introduced in 4th Grade, x can be confusing as both a multiplication symbol and a variable. The authors of Everyday Mathematics chose to use * because computers and some calculators use * for multiplication.
