Understanding Everyday Mathematics

Everyday Mathematics Philosophy

To guide curriculum development, the original Everyday Mathematics authors formulated a set of beliefs and principles based on research about what worked best in other countries and in the authors' own field research. Based on these principles, the original Everyday Mathematics authors identified guidelines for the best teaching methods that help children build a strong mathematical foundation in their elementary education years.

Curriculum Features

Based on this philosophy, the Everyday Mathematics authors created a curriculum that featured several specific pedagogical principles. These principles include emphasizing appropriate use of technology, teaching real-life problem solving, improving home/school partnership, and more.

The Role of Games in Everyday Mathematics

At Everyday Mathematics, games are not considered competitors for class time, nor are they viewed as mere time-fillers and rewards. In fact, we believe that games satisfy many standard drill objectives that can help children master and reinforce skills and concepts.

The Role of Calculators in Everyday Mathematics

Based on research showing that the use of calculators can enhance students' performance in number sense, conceptual development, and visualization, the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics recommends the integration of calculators into mathematics programs for all grade levels. With this in mind, Everyday Mathematics emphasizes using the calculator as a tool for learning mathematics, and offers appropriate applications for calculators at each grade level.
